South Korea parliament begins historic vote to impeach Park

South Korean President Park Geun-Hye speaks during an address to the nation, at the presidential Blue House in SeoulBy Ju-min Park and Kim Daewoung SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean lawmakers began voting on Friday on whether to impeach President Park Geun-hye over an influence peddling scandal, setting the stage for her to become the country's first elected leader to be pushed out of office in disgrace. Parliament was expected to vote in favor of impeachment, with support from some members of Park's conservative Saenuri Party, according to opposition parties, but the Constitutional Court must decide whether to uphold the motion, a process that could take up to 180 days. There have been mass rallies every Saturday for the past six weeks calling for Park to quit, and opinion polls show overwhelming public support for her impeachment.

South Korea parliament starts vote on impeaching President ParkSEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's parliament on Friday started voting on an impeachment motion against President Park Geun-hye, who is engulfed in a corruption scandal that has fueled calls for her to step down. The opposition-backed motion, which requires at least 200 of the 300 members of the single-chamber assembly to impeach Park, is expected to be approved.
