AT&T-Time Warner deal sparks calls for scrutiny in Washington

Signage that reads Time Warner is seen at the Time Warner Center in New York CityBy Julia Edwards and Diane Bartz WASHINGTON (Reuters) - AT&T Inc's proposed $85 billion takeover of Time Warner Inc generated skepticism among both Democrats and Republicans on Sunday, making it more likely that regulators will closely scrutinize the effort to create a new telecommunications and media giant. The biggest deal of the year, announced just over two weeks before the Nov. 8 U.S. election, is a gamble on a victory for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and a continuation of the status quo on anti-trust and regulatory enforcement. The Republican candidate Donald Trump, who is trailing Clinton in the polls, has said he would block the takeover.

Baker NEW YORK (Reuters) - When Time Warner Inc's Jeff Bewkes welcomed AT&T Inc's Randall Stephenson for lunch at Time Warner Center in New York in late August, their meeting was supposed to be one of the catch-ups the two chief executives have had over the years. Stephenson and Bewkes discussed how Time Warner could reach more customers through AT&T's mobile network, and how that content could reinforce the loyalty of customers.

Venezuela congress presses for Maduro trial in rowdy session

A general view of Venezuela's National Assembly as supporters of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro storm into a session of the National Assembly in CaracasBy Alexandra Ulmer and Deisy Buitrago CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition-led National Assembly in a rowdy session on Sunday pressed to put Nicolas Maduro on trial for violating democracy, days after authorities nixed a recall referendum against the unpopular leftist president. The measure is unlikely to get traction as the government and the Supreme Court have systematically undermined the legislature on grounds it is illegitimate until it removes three lawmakers accused of vote-buying. "It is a political and legal trial against President Nicolas Maduro to see what responsibility he has in the constitutional rupture that has broken democracy, human rights, and the future of the country," said opposition majority leader Julio Borges during a special congressional meeting.

Washington state 'grossly' unprepared for major quake: report

The Space Needle and Mount Rainier are pictured at dusk in Seattle, Washington(Reuters) - Washington state is grossly unprepared for a large earthquake and tsunami that may strike in the coming decades, putting it at risk for a humanitarian disaster, the Seattle Times reported on Sunday, citing a draft government report. Researchers, however, have come to believe that an 8.0 to 9.0 magnitude temblor has shaken Oregon and Washington every 230 years or so. To prepare for that possibility, Washington officials organized a four-day exercise called "Cascadia Rising" in June, and the results were laid out in a draft report, the Seattle Times reported.
