Dutch probe: Malaysian jet downed by launcher from Russia
Bombers of civilians in Aleppo will face God's judgment: popePope Francis urged forces to stop bombing civilians in the Syrian city of Aleppo, warning them on Wednesday they would face God's judgment. Speaking to tens of thousands of people in St. Peter's Square, Francis called Aleppo "this already martyred city, where everybody is dying - children, old people, sick people, young people." He did not name the bombers, but monitors say Syria's government and its Russian backers have stepped up air attacks on rebel-held parts of the northern city since the end of a ceasefire last week. "I renew to all an appeal to commit themselves with all their strength to protect civilians," Francis told the crowd during his weekly address.

French policy shift leaves Gabon's Bongo out in the cold
By Tim Cocks DAKAR (Reuters) - In the heyday of former President Omar Bongo, Gabon and its oil wealth were a central pillar of "La Francafrique", a shadowy network that enabled France's troops to defend African autocrats in exchange for juicy contracts for French companies. France's energy firms, meanwhile, had undisputed claims to some of the continent's richest oil fields. France's position has been clear since the Aug. 27 poll: it has "doubts" about its credibility, so it won't endorse Bongo as the winner against his main opponent Jean Ping - a clear message that Bongo's half-century family dynasty can no longer count on support from Gabon's former colonial master.

Families: investigation found MH17 downed from pro-Russia rebel held territory
By Toby Sterling and Anthony Deutsch NIEUWEGEIN, Netherlands (Reuters) - International prosecutors investigating the downing of a Malaysian airliner two years ago have concluded it was shot down by a Russian-made missile fired from rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, victims' family members said on Wednesday. Families were informed of the prosecutors' findings shortly before a news conference was due to start in the central Dutch city of Nieuwegein on the outcome of the investigation. A surface-to-air missile hit Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, killing all 298 people aboard, most of them Dutch citizens.
