Berlusconi at 80: 'regrets I have a few'

Silvio Berlusconi turns 80 on September 29, 2016Silvio Berlusconi celebrated his 80th birthday on Thursday, away from the limelight he enjoyed for decades as a flamboyant Italian prime minister, media tycoon and owner of AC Milan. "I think Berlusconi will be remembered 300 years from now for the things he did in football, publishing and television," said Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Twice-divorced Berlusconi was thought to be spending the day with his 31-year-old girlfriend Francesca Pascale and an extended family that he admits to having neglected during the course of his business and political careers.

In escalation, India says launches strikes on militants in Pakistan

An Indian army soldier patrols along a highway on the outskirts of SrinagarBy Sanjeev Miglani and Asad Hashim NEW DELHI/ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - India said on Thursday it had conducted "surgical strikes" on suspected militants preparing to infiltrate from Pakistan-ruled Kashmir, making its first direct military response to an attack on an army base it blames on Pakistan. Pakistan said two of its soldiers had been killed in exchanges of fire and in repulsing an Indian "raid", but denied that India had made any targeted strikes across the de facto frontier that runs through the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir. The cross-border action inflicted significant casualties, the Indian army's head of operations told reporters in New Delhi, while a senior government official said Indian soldiers had crossed the border to target militant camps.

A couple view properties for sale in an estate agents window in LondonBy David Milliken and Peter Hobson LONDON (Reuters) - British lenders approved the fewest mortgages in nearly two years last month as the housing market continued to slow after June's vote to leave the European Union, raising the chance of an outright fall in prices next year. Housing market slowdowns have typically heralded future weakness in broader British economic growth. The number of mortgage approvals last month dropped to its lowest since November 2014 at 60,058 -- roughly in line with the decline forecast in a Reuters poll, monthly BoE data showed.
