Poland concerned about Russian warship deployment in KaliningradWARSAW (Reuters) - Poland expressed concerns on Wednesday over reports that Russia is sharply upgrading the firepower of its Baltic Fleet in Kaliningrad by adding warships with long-range cruise missiles. Moscow has not confirmed the report in Russian daily Izvestia newspaper. "This is an obvious cause for concern," Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz was quoted as saying by local news agency PAP. "Moving such ships on the Baltic (sea) changes the balance of power." Macierewicz is in Brussels for a NATO ministers' meeting. (Reporting by Jakub Iglewski; Editing by Toby Chopra)

Russia scraps Spain fuel stop for Syria-bound warships

Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is sailing to the eastern MediterraneanRussia scrapped plans Wednesday to refuel Syria-bound warships in a Spanish port after Madrid came under pressure to refuse access to a flotilla that may be used to help attacks on Aleppo. The Spanish foreign ministry said that three Russian ships -- part of a wider flotilla led by aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov -- had been due to take on fuel and supplies from Friday at the port of Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the north coast of Africa. There has been concern that the ships could take part in air strikes in Syria, where Russia has been staging a bombing campaign for the past year in support of President Bashar al-Assad and has deployed a naval contingent to back up its operation.

Venezuela opposition marches against Maduro 'dictatorship'

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro speaks during a pro-government rally at Miraflores Palace in CaracasBy Alexandra Ulmer and Andrew Cawthorne CARACAS (Reuters) - Opposition supporters rallied throughout Venezuela on Wednesday against unpopular socialist President Nicolas Maduro, whom they accuse of turning into a dictator by preventing a plebiscite to remove him. The opposition coalition says Maduro must go before the situation worsens, but Venezuela's electoral authorities last week canceled a planned signature drive to hold a recall referendum against him, citing fraud. An enraged opposition said Maduro, a former bus driver and union leader who narrowly won election to succeed Hugo Chavez in 2013, had crossed the line.
