WHO calls for safe routes to evacuate east Aleppo sick, woundedBy Stephanie Nebehay GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) called on Tuesday for dozens of sick and wounded people in the embattled eastern part of the Syrian city of Aleppo to be evacuated through safe corridors for treatment. The Syrian military, helped by Iranian-backed Shi'ite militias and the Russian air force, launched a major campaign to take rebel-held eastern Aleppo last week, where the WHO said only 35 doctors remained to care for at least 250,000 people. "We are talking about only 35 doctors left in east Aleppo to take care of hundreds of wounded people, and the number is increasing," she said.
Syrian government mobilizes for new Aleppo ground attackPro-Syrian government forces were mobilizing on Tuesday for a ground attack in Aleppo after attacking on four fronts in their largest assault since launching a campaign to retake the whole city last week, a senior rebel official said. Separately, an Iraqi militia commander fighting in support of the government told Reuters a large army force, spearheaded by an elite unit known as the Nimr, or Tiger Forces, had started to move in armored vehicles and tanks for an attack on rebel-held districts of eastern Aleppo. During a brief trial at the International Criminal Court in August Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi asked for forgiveness and said he had been swept up in an "evil wave" by al Qaeda and the Ansar Dine Islamist groups that briefly seized control of the ancient sites. In June and July of 2012 "10 of the most important and well-known sites in Timbuktu were attacked and destroyed.
