Jakarta governor dropping appeal 'for sake of nation'
The wife of Jakarta's Christian governor told a tearful press conference Tuesday her husband had withdrawn his appeal against a blasphemy conviction and two-year jail term for the good of Indonesia. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was jailed this month for insulting the Koran while campaigning for re-election, a shock decision that stoked concern about rising religious intolerance in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation. The blasphemy allegations against Purnama, Jakarta's first non-Muslim governor for half a century and first ethnic Chinese leader, sparked mass protests spearheaded by radicals.
Syrian army says senior Islamic State militant killed
The Syrian army said on Wednesday it had killed Islamic State's military commander in Syria during operations in the north of the country, where the Russian-backed government forces are seizing more territory back from the jihadist group. If confirmed, this would represent a major blow against Islamic State (IS) ahead of an attack which the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters - are expected to launch against the jihadists in their stronghold of Raqqa city. A Syrian military source told Reuters the IS commander, Abu Musab al-Masri, had been the group's "minister of war" for Syria.
Charging bear attacks hunter in terrifying encounter caught on video
A Canadian hunter is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a black bear. Richard Wesley was bow hunting near Fire River, Ontario, when he noticed a large black bear roaming nearby. At first, the bear seemed unfazed by Wesley's presence, but when the hunter makes a sound in an attempt to scare off the approaching bear, it charges. Wesley attempts to make as much noise as possible, and even punches the attacking bear in the face. The camera falls and the hunter returns just a few seconds later, visibly shook by the near death experience. "I should have shot a long time ago," Wesley says into the camera just seconds after the attack. Luckily, the hunter walked away nearly unscathed. "No wounds except a bruised elbow and ego where the bear threw me down," Wesley wrote on YouTube. "Genuinely happy that this was a non fatal or tragic outcome."
